UPF 50+ is an extra layer of sun protection for the skin covered by the swimsuit. It is useful for long pool or beach days, when children are in and out of the water and sunscreen can wear off more quickly.

You will still want sunscreen on exposed skin, a hat for time out of the water and shade breaks when you can, especially around midday.

For swimming lessons, choose a style that feels snug enough to stay put but still lets your child stretch, kick and move freely. A simple, comfortable rashsuit or rash guard is usually the easiest choice for a first lesson. It is also worth checking your swim school’s rules before you buy, as there may be colour or coverage requirements.

A hooded swim robe is especially handy after swimming. Pop it on straight after a swim to dry your child off and keep them warm while you walk to the car, head for lunch or wait for siblings to finish.

Give swimwear a quick rinse in cool water after every pool or beach day. Once you are home, wash it gently according to the care label and dry it in the shade. Try not to leave it wet in a swim bag or wrapped in a towel for too long, as chlorine, salt water and sunscreen can affect the colour and stretch.
