The quick answer: before choosing your baby's first walking shoes, check three things. The toes can spread, the sole bends where the foot bends, and the shoe stays on without squeezing. Then pick the colour you love.
Check 1: Can their toes spread?
Look for a toe box that is wide and rounded like a baby's foot, so the toes can sit straight and relaxed. With your baby standing, the toes should not be pressed together or touching the sides.
Check 2: Does the sole bend where the foot bends?
Hold the shoe and gently bend it. A good first walker bends easily at the front, where the toes bend, and feels light in your hand. Very stiff or heavy soles make stepping harder for new walkers.
Check 3: Does the shoe stay on without squeezing?
Let your baby take a few supported steps. The heel should stay in place, and after about 10 minutes the straps and upper should not leave marks that stay. Adjustable straps help with chubbier or higher feet.
Does my baby need shoes indoors?
Usually not. On a safe, clean floor at home, bare feet are fine while babies learn to walk. First shoes are for walking outside, on pavements, playgrounds and mall floors.
